Richard
Starita, M.D.
Dr. Starita grew up with his family in the small town of
Scotch Plains, New Jersey. He started his professional career at Seton Hall University. There,
he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelors of science in chemistry. This enabled him
to enroll at the University of Medicine and Dentistry at Newark, New Jersey. It was here, during his fourth and last
year of training, that he decided to make ophthalmology his career choice. In 1977, he earned
his doctorate of medicine. Knowing he was going to
return to New York and never having left New Jersey, he picked the University of Hawaii in
Honolulu for his rotating internship. After a successful year, he started his training in ophthalmology. He chose to study
under Paul Henkind, M.D. Ph.D., at Montefiore Medical Center. This is a branch of the Albert Einstein School of
Medicine located in the Bronx. He completed his residency in 1981. He
decided to pursue a career in glaucoma. This took him to Wills Eye
Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed his glaucoma fellowship under
the direction of George Spaeth, M.D. and Rick Wilson, M.D. in 1983.
It was at Wills Eye Hospital that Dr. Starita first met and worked
with his future partner, Dr. Ronald Fellman. After fellowship, Dr.
Starita returned to New York to take on an academic position. He was
appointed director of its glaucoma service at Montefiore / Albert
Einstein. He was recruited by Dr. John Lynn and Dr. Ronald Fellman
to The Glaucoma Associates of Texas in 1986. He has remained in
private practice with the group ever since.
Dr. Starita was certified as a fellow by The American Board of Ophthalmology in 1983. He has
been an active member of The American Glaucoma Society since 1989. He received his
honor award from The American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1993. He has been listed in
the glaucoma section of “Best doctors in America” since its original publication in 1994. He
has co-authorized over 40 published articles and papers on the medical and surgical
management of glaucoma.
Dr. Starita is happily married. When time permits, he and his wife enjoy adventure travel.
